The slang term for this condition is called “Greek foot.” It was an idealized form in Greek sculpture, and this persisted as an aesthetic standard through Roman and Renaissance periods and later (the Statue of Liberty has toes of this proportion).

People who have “Greek Foot” suffer from pain in their second toe because it bends harder while running or exercising. The risk is much higher for people who run daily.

The most important thing you can do is wear shoes that have enough space for your toes. You know when a person at a shoe store asks if you want to try on a pair and walk around…DO IT! You’ll know very quickly if it will help with your discomfort.

Another thing you can do is where comfortable custom insoles to ensure you are distributing your body weight evenly.
